EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana Men’s Soccer lost a rough and tumble 2021 opener, 2-0, to Oakland City University at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles begin the campaign 0-1-0, while the Mighty Oaks even their record at 2-2-0.
USI fell behind early when Oakland City took a 1-0 lead at 5:42 of the match. The Mighty Oaks would hold the 1-0 advantage through the intermission.
In the second half, the Eagles started to gain some momentum offensively had a flurry of opportunities to start the final 20 minutes of the game. Freshman midfielder Seth Davis had a hard shot stopped by the Oakland City defense at 18:35, while senior forward Graham Miller missed a close header at 16:55 and had a second shot hit the post at 16:11.
Oakland City sealed USI’s fate at 87:09 with its second goal of the match and the 2-0 final.
UPCOMING FOR THE EAGLES:
USI continues its season-opening homestand Friday when it hosts Davenport University for an 11 a.m. match at Strassweg Field. The Eagles won the only meeting with the Panthers, 3-2, on the road in 2018.
Davenport begins the season 0-2-0 after falling to the University of Illinois Springfield, 3-2, Thursday in Springfield, Illinois, and Maryville University, 2-1, this afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri.
