EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana Men’s Basketball announced the signing of sophomore forward Stephen Olowoniyi (Melbourne, Australia) for the 2024-25 season. Olowoniyi is the sixth player to sign with USI and Head Coach Stan Gouard this spring.
“Stephen is as tough as they come and an incredible person, we are lucky to have him,” Gouard said. “Anybody who has seen Stephen play knows how special of an athlete he is and has the ability to change a game with his athleticism.
“Stephen is also an incredibly hard worker who lives in the gym,” continued Gouard. “His versatility will impact our team from day one.”
Olowoniyi arrives at USI after playing last season at the Virginia Military Institute in 2023-24. The 6-foot-8 forward averaged 7.7 points, 5.3 rebounds per game and blocked 25 shotes in 32 appearances last season. He dropped in a season-high 16 points versus Samford University and grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds three times as a freshman.
Prior to his year at VMI, Olowoniyi graduated from The Webb School (Bell Buckle, Tennessee). He averaged 13.2 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game and was named the TSWA All-State. Olowoniyi also was a member of the U19 Australian National Team training camp invitee.
The Screaming Eagles reached the Ohio Valley Conference Championship post-season in 2023-24 marking the second-straight season since USI made the transition to NCAA Division I. USI appeared in the 2023 College Basketball Invitational during its first transition year.
