THE NOTES TO KNOW
• The No. 6-ranked Purdue men’s basketball looks to bounce back from its first loss of the season when it hosts a good Marshall squad on Saturday in Mackey Arena, beginning at noon. The Boilermakers are coming off a loss at No. 15-ranked Marquette and look to regain momentum heading into next week’s Rady Children’s Invitational in San Diego beginning on Thanksgiving Day.
• Purdue is one of three teams nationally to have played two top-15 ranked teams (Texas A&M-Commerce, Kansas City, Purdue).
• In the loss to Marquette, Purdue lost in the month of November for the first time since the CoVid year of 2020-21, when it fell to Clemson on Nov. 26, 2020, in the finals of the Space Coast Challenge. Purdue had won 25 straight games in the month.
• The Boilermakers haven’t lost a non-conference home game since Nov. 9, 2019, vs. Texas — a span of 1,842 days and 30 games. The streak is the longest non-conference home winning streak in school history.
• Turnovers tell the story for Purdue. Since the start of the 2021-22 season, Purdue is 47-3 when it forces at least 10 turnovers in a game and when Purdue has single-digit turnovers in that span, the Boilermakers are 33-2.
• Purdue ranks eighth nationally in 3-point percentage (.438), one year after ranking second nationally. Since the start of last season, Purdue is shooting 40.8 percent from long distance, averaging 8.3 made 3-pointers per game.
• Purdue has yet to allow an opponent a 10-0 run or larger, while having three runs of 10-0 or larger themselves. Since the start of last season, Purdue is 22-0 in games that it has had a run or 10-0 or larger and has won 53 of its last 54 games with a 10-0 run or better.
• Purdue has trailed for a total of 5 minutes and 56 seconds out of 160 minutes of game time in Mackey Arena this season.
• In the “stealing points” categories (points off turnovers, 2nd-chance points), Purdue is getting outscored this season by a 115-108 margin.
• The trio of Trey Kaufman-Renn, Fletcher Loyer and Braden Smith have combined to average 48.4 points and 15.0 assists per game so far this season. The trio accounts for 60.7 percent of Purdue’s scoring and 81.5 percent of Purdue’s assists.
• Purdue is one of three schools nationally (UCF, Cincinnati, Purdue) to have three players average at least 14.0 points and 2.5 assists per game.
• Braden Smith needs eight assists for 500 in his career. Should he dish out eight assists against Marshall, he would reach 500 career assists in just his 80th game.
• Trey Kaufman-Renn is one of three players nationally to average 17.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and shoot at least 60.0 percent from the field (Nique Clifford – Colorado State; Ante Brzovic – College of Charleston).
• Since the start of March 2024 (16 games), Fletcher Loyer is 32-of-53 (.604) from 3-point range,
• Purdue has been ranked in 41 straight AP Top 25 polls, the sixth-longest active streak in the country and the third longest in school history.
• With Purdue’s No. 6 ranking in the AP Top 25 poll, Purdue has been ranked in the top six in 38 of the last 40 AP Top 25 polls. It has been ranked in the top 10 in 57 of the last 62 AP polls.
• Purdue is looking to become the first team to win three straight outright Big Ten titles since the Boilermakers did it in 1994-96. Ohio State also accomplished the feat in 1960-62 as the only programs to record an outright “threepeat”.
• Purdue, Duke, Gonzaga and Houston are the only programs in America to have made at least a Sweet 16, Elite 8 and Final Four in the last five NCAA Tournaments. Purdue reached the Sweet 16 in 2022, the Elite 8 in 2019 and the Final Four in 2024.
